How Municipal Court Warrants Work
Municipal warrants usually grow out of a city court's ordinance, traffic, or failure-to-appear case. Blackford County no longer fits that mold. Under Indiana's current court identifiers, Blackford/Hartford City City Court 05H01 and Blackford/Montpelier City Court 05H02 are both abolished. So is Blackford County Court 05E01, and no justice of the peace court operates anywhere in Blackford County. All trial work now sits with Blackford Circuit Court 05C01 and Blackford Superior Court 05D01. The elected Blackford County Clerk keeps the files for both of those courts. A city police department can still issue or explain a citation in Blackford County. It does not become the recordkeeper, though, and it cannot recall a court warrant on its own. For any warrant question in Blackford County, the successor court and the Clerk are the offices that answer.
Blackford's Former City-Court Identifiers
Old identifiers can make a stale search result look fresh. That is the trap. Archived or converted material often keeps the court name that first held the case, so a page can carry a label for an office that no longer exists. The label is history, not proof of an open door. Blackford County's own records make the point: the official Odyssey list shows Blackford Circuit and Superior Courts on the system since January 4, 2010.
| 05H01 | Former Hartford City City Court, now abolished. |
|---|---|
| 05H02 | Former Montpelier City Court, now abolished. |
| 05E01 | Former Blackford County Court, now abolished. |
| 05C01 | Current Blackford Circuit Court. |
| 05D01 | Current Blackford Superior Court. |
Hand any historical code to the Blackford County Clerk and ask where the archived or successor record is kept today.
Municipal Courts Across Blackford County
Of the four incorporated communities, none has an active Blackford County municipal court listed in the current state directory. Local police contact and current court authority are not the same thing.
| Place | Current city court | Practical route |
|---|---|---|
| Hartford City | None; 05H01 abolished | County Clerk and 05C01 or 05D01 |
| Montpelier | None; 05H02 abolished | County Clerk and current county court |
| Shamrock Lakes | None identified | County Clerk and Sheriff |
| Dunkirk | None in Blackford directory | First identify Blackford or Jay County |
Dunkirk straddles the county line. A Blackford County office cannot recall a Jay County warrant, so the citation's county and court matter more than the town name.
Why No Hartford City Court Page Exists
Hartford City is the county seat of Blackford County and runs its own police department, but a police force is not a city court. The city services directory lists Hartford City Police at 700 North Walnut Street, reachable at 765-348-4819. Officers can help you identify an incident or citation. Court records, though, route to the county courthouse. For the current structure, View Indiana's official Odyssey court list.

The Odyssey list confirms it: use 05C01 and 05D01 for current Blackford County searches. Treat 05H01 as closed, not open.
Blackford County Municipal Warrant Checks
Blackford County posts no official city warrant portal, municipal roster, or warrant desk. MyCase is the online case-search route, though Indiana Courts states plainly that it is not a warrant search. A warrant event can still surface in a case's chronological summary.
- Search by citation, case, or cross-reference number. A citation is usually the cleanest starting key.
- If needed, search by party and narrow with first name, middle name, or date of birth used privately.
- Choose Blackford Circuit or Superior Court and review IF, OV, CM, or other relevant case types.
- Call the Clerk at 765-348-1130. Circuit lists 765-348-2901 and Superior lists 765-348-1840.
- Ask the Sheriff at 765-348-0930, extension 3201, about service or booking logistics, not recall authority.
A blank result is not clearance. Sealed, juvenile, archived, or simply unavailable entries may require direct confirmation from the Blackford County court that holds the file.
Old City-Court Case, Current Answer
When a record shows 05H01 or 05H02, write down the full case number and event date. Never send money to a municipal counter you assume exists. Call the Blackford County Clerk, say the search returned an abolished identifier, and ask four things. Where is the file held now, which current court controls the case, is a warrant still active, and what process applies?
Key Point: An abolished court code can identify history, but only the current recordkeeper and issuing authority can confirm live warrant status.
If the Clerk finds an archived file, ask how to get nonconfidential documents. The Indiana Access to Public Records Act lets you request them. Identify the record with reasonable particularity. A request tied to a known Blackford County case works far better than a broad demand for every warrant.
Municipal Warrants: What They Show
Blackford County publishes no field list for municipal warrants. The dependable terms come from Indiana warrant law and MyCase case summaries. A public summary may show only an event, not the signed command behind it.
| Case or cause number | Uniform number, including a current or historical court identifier. |
|---|---|
| Classification | Bench warrant, arrest warrant, or failure-to-appear wording used by the court. |
| Reason | Charge, missed setting, or order that produced the event. |
| Issue details | Date, county, court, and judge or clerk authority where public. |
| Bail | Amount, if any; Blackford publishes no general schedule. |
| Status | Active, served, recalled, quashed, or disposed as the current court confirms. |
Indiana sources generally use warrant, arrest warrant, bench warrant, and failure to appear. "Capias pro fine" is not a confirmed Blackford County label.
Traffic Payment Versus Warrant Recall
The Blackford County Clerk's page says it collects traffic payments by cash or money order. Its published $135 infraction and ordinance figures do not add up to a warrant total. Paying and recalling are separate questions. A judge may want an appearance, a reset, a motion, bond, or some other step before any Blackford County warrant is recalled.
| Action | Who handles it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Identify payment | County Clerk | Current balance and accepted method |
| Recall or quash | Issuing court | Order entered and effective date |
| Service logistics | Sheriff | Booking or surrender instructions |
Keep every receipt and court order, then confirm the CCS entry updated. Never assume a Blackford County warrant dies just because payment cleared.
Clearing a Municipal Court Warrant
Resolution starts with the successor record in Blackford County, not the old court name. No office here publishes a city warrant amount, payment plan, recall form, amnesty calendar, bond schedule, or walk-in surrender window.
- Confirm the case number, present court, and live status with the Clerk.
- Ask the issuing court whether payment, a hearing, a motion, appearance, or bond is required.
- Consult counsel when a filing or planned surrender is appropriate. The Sheriff can explain logistics but cannot cancel the court's command.
- Obtain proof of recall or disposition and ask when the public CCS will update.
Warning: Do not rely on payment, a blank search, or a police conversation as proof that a court warrant was recalled.
Dunkirk's Two-County Warrant Problem
Dunkirk sits in two counties at once, with city limits reaching into Blackford County and Jay County. The police department there works from 130 South Main Street and answers at 765-768-6061, but a local address settles nothing about where a case lives. The citation itself tells you that. Check it for the county, the court, and the case number before you pick up the phone. When a Dunkirk matter is a Blackford County case, it runs through the Blackford Clerk and the county's current courts, and a Jay County case belongs in Jay County's own channels. MyCase can pin down the right court if you search by citation or case number. Remember the limit on cross-county help. Dunkirk Police cannot recall a warrant issued by a Jay County court, and no Blackford County office can either. Only the issuing court holds that power. Montpelier tells a similar story in miniature. Montpelier Police, at 127 W Huntington Street, can help you sort out a local incident, though the town's former 05H02 court is no longer an active destination. Shamrock Lakes lists neither a separate police warrant page nor a municipal court. In each town, the local contact supplies context while the current Clerk and court answer the legal question. For a Blackford County file, the courthouse stands at 110 W Washington Street in Hartford City, and visitors use the north Main Street entrance with the north parking, pass through metal detection, and need permission before using a phone on the third floor. A quick call ahead confirms the right office and papers. The Sheriff sits apart at 0064 N 500 E, so record work at the courthouse and service questions may mean separate stops.
